IEEE EMBS Grand Challenge Forum on Data Science and Engineering in Healthcare - Virtual Feb. 10-13, 2021


This forum aims to highlight and discuss the challenges and opportunities of Data Science innovations in healthcare, medicine and biology, and how these innovations can be translated into cutting-edge healthcare and biomedical engineering curriculums.


The forum will have the following four symposiums:


Dr. Thad Wadas named Small Animal Imaging Core (SAIC) director

Dr. Thad Wadas has recently joined the faculty of the Department of Radiology in the Carver College of Medicine to lead Small Animal Imaging Core (SAIC).

The Iowa Institute for Biomedical Imaging (IIBI) research team wins the best machine-learning paper at the International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI 2019) in Venice, Italy. ISBI is a scientific conference dedicated to mathematical, algorithmic, and computational aspects of biological and biomedical imaging, across all scales of observation. ISBI is a joint initiative from the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) and the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS).

Christensen Elected Fellow of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers

Gary Christensen, professor of electrical and computer engineering, has been elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for his contributions to medical image registration and analysis.

Christensen also is professor of UI radiation oncology and computational imaging group leader in the Iowa Institute for Biomedical Imaging.  His present research interests are in global shape models and medical imaging.

The University of Iowa ushered in a new age of accelerated research in biomedicine with the formal opening on Wednesday, Oct. 15, of the $126 million John and Mary Pappajohn Biomedical Discovery Building (PBDB).
